Description
New Kingdom, 1550-1070 BC. A bright blue round-section hoop with rectangular plaque, depicting Bes standing between figures of Taweret. 0.99 grams, 23mm overall, 15.97mm internal diameter (approximate size British K, USA 5 1/4, Europe 10.0, Japan 9) (1"). Ex Dolman collection; acquired 1920s. Bes was ancient Egyptian deity worshipped as a protector of households, and in particular, of mothers and children and childbirth. Bes later came to be regarded as the defender of everything good and the enemy of all that is bad. Taweret was protective ancient Egyptian goddess of childbirth and fertility. It is thus likely that this ring was a talisman for an expectant mother.
