Description
8th century BC. A exaleiptron vessel in orange ceramic with red and white painted decoration in the orientalising style, characterised by floral and animal motifs; to the upper face a procession of elongated bovines and felines; to the inner rim, a series of tongue-shaped petals; to the inner bottom face a stylised flower motif within a circle; two protruding rims to the body of the vessel; flat-section scrolled handle to the side and pedestal base beneath, the inward curved lip of the rim to prevent spillage when the vessel was being carried. 920 grams, 24cm (9 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired on the London art market in the 1960s.
