Description
Circa 1300 AD. A slightly concave cast heater shield-shaped appliqué with raised border, red enamelled field with reserved trefoils and two vertical barbels. 27 grams, 60mm (2 1/2"). From an important collection of horse harness pendants and mounts; property of a Suffolk, UK, gentleman. Accompanied by a print-out of the history of Raoul of Clermont. This has the arms of Clermont Nesle, and was probably produced in France. The same arms appear on the lid of a Nautilus cup, belonging to All Souls College, Oxford, and now on loan to, and displayed in the British Museum. This is usually dated to 1300 and is assigned to Paris. [No Reserve]
