Description
14th-15th century AD. A flat-section quatrefoil pendant with stub of the suspension loop; a central red enamelled field with reserved lion passant, four blue panels with fleurs-de-lys, red interstitial lobes; loop lost in antiquity. 6.92 grams, 27mm (1"). From an important collection of horse harness pendants and mounts; property of a Suffolk, UK, gentleman. Cf. Ashley, S. Medieval Armorial Horse Furniture in Norfolk, East Anglian Archaeology 101, Dereham, 2002, items 209, 210, 211. Ashley suggests that the combination of heraldic motifs denotes the combination of the royals arms of England (gold lions on a red field) and France (gold fleurs-de-lys on a blue field").
