The satamana, from northern India, is one of the oldest world currencies, valued at 100 rattis of silver by weight; the rattis being the weight of seeds (in the same way as cereal grains in Europe were used as a weight standard at a later period); the currency was near contemporary with the earliest electrum punch-marked Greek slug coins of Lydia.
