Description
AMERICAN SCHOOL (19TH CENTURY) PORTRAIT OF A LADY. Oil on canvas. Unsigned Sight: 30'' x 25'' Frame: 40'' x 35''
Condition
This piece has some restoration, but looks good to the naked eye. There is some faint craquelure to the surface that has been heated and stabilized. There is some impasto crushing to the paint from heating. The canvas has been re-stretched and there is a wax lining. Under backlight there no heavy varnish layer to the surface. There are a medium amount of overpainting lines on cracks throughout the painting. On the face there are about a dozen of these .25" diameter - 2" long lines of overpainting. Under black light there are many of similar sized lines scattering the dress, and about a dozen in the background pigment. To the naked eye some of this overpainting is visible only upon close inspection of the painted surface. There is some slight dark pigment speckling to the surface in the background, unclear if this is grime, or intentional to the painting. There is possibly some light over cleaning, unclear what is intentional glazing by the painter versus over-cleaning.
