This piece has significant restoration. The canvas has been relined and re-stretched, there is some impasto crushing to the surface from the canvas being heated for repair. There is visible craquelure with grime build up to the crevices in the flesh tone. Under black light there is a heavy varnish layer over most of the canvas, but there is some visible overpainting to the right edge of the face in the shadows and the right shadowed side of the nose. There is also more scattered in-painting in the more significant cracks on the skin. There is more possible overpainting that is difficult to read under the vanish layer. There appears to be a 4" diagonal line in the middle of the upper right quadrant that is slightly raised and a slightly darker tone. This appears to be a patch to the surface, possibly a previous tear. There is another area of possible patched rips at the top of the painting. This section is about 4" x 5".
