Description
Daniel Chester French (1850-1931) historical bust of military general William Francis Bartlett. Some chips to the edges, wear to the finish and repair to the tip of the nose. Signed on the back “D.C. French, 1881”. Measures 31 in. high. The original sculpture was commissioned by Harvard University to memorialize their famous graduate, it was placed in Memorial Hall (West wall) along with a plaque. D.C. French, a well known American sculptor of the 19th/20th century, noted for sculpting the "Lincoln Memorial". General Bartlett was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, he attended Harvard college and as a Junior he joined the 4th Battalion of the Massachusetts Volunteer Militia; he met and married a girl from the hometown of "Fontaine's Auction Gallery", Pittsfield, MA. where he spent the rest of his life and is buried.
