Description
Thomas Bigelow Craig, A.N.A. (American, 1849-1924), "Return from Pasture, October Afternoon", signed lower left, signed and titled en verso, 18 1/4 in. x 26 in., framed. Provenance: A New York family estate Note: Born in Philadelphia, Thomas Biegelow Craig was primarily a self-taught artist, although he is believed to have studied briefly at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts contemporaneously with Thomas Eakins. In 1889, Craig moved to New York and exhibited his paintings at the National Academy of Design, the Boston Art Club, the Brooklyn Art Association, and the Art Institute of Chicago. A respected artist of his day, Craig was a member of some of the country's preeminent artist associations, including the National Academy, Salmagundi Club and Artists Fund Society. The pastoral landscape with grazing cattle offered here is typical for Craig and similar to a scene at the Philips Museum of Art. References: Falk, P. H.
