Vera de Bosset Stravinsky (Russian/American, 1888-1982), "The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky, The Santa Fe Opera", 1959, watercolor on paper, signed, initialed "V.S." lower right, 10 in. x 13 3/4 in., framed. Provenance: Acquired from the artist, Eleanor Bedell The Shop, Santa Fe, c. 1961 Note: The Russian actress, dancer and painter, Vera de Bosset was the long term lover and then wife of American composer Igor Stravinsky. Stravinsky's "The Firebird" ballet performed in Paris at the Ballet Rusees in 1910, propelled the composer into prominence. Beginning in 1957, Stravinsky and his wife Vera de Bosset made annual visits to Santa Fe at the invitation of John Crosby, director of the Santa Fe Opera. Several of Stravinsky's pieces were performed at the San Fee Opera including a revival of "The Firebird". By 1949, Vera had focused her attention of painting and created this lively and vibrant watercolor rendition of her husband's ballet as performed at The Santa Fe Opera.
