Description
China, late 18th to early 19th century. Fabulous carved wooden statuette of Lokapala, an armed knight and guardian of the world. He stands on a wooden base, wearing ornate battle garb, left armed raised, fierce expression upon his face, much of his original red, gold and gray pigment remains. Size: 10-1/4" H x 4-1/4" W.
Provenance: Ex-Burns collection acquired in the 1950's to 1970s. Mr. Burns was an avid collector of things like this and several of the other Asian items in this auction. He is in his 80's and was a major early figure in mountaineering summitting Everest and several other peaks around the globe. He spent a great deal of time in China, Nepal and Tibet and acquired a wonderful collection.
