Large Songye Female Kifwebe Mask
Item Details
Description
Africa, Lualaba River region, Songye, early 20th century.  An exemplary Kifwebe mask, created by the Songye and worn in association with the Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe secret society.  Kifwebe literally means "mask" in the Songye language.  Fine example with meticulously carved linear incisions covering the wooden face, a square protruding mouth, and a linear nose set between two globular pierced eyes.  Nicely painted  white detail to contrast with dark hardwood.  The female examples typically possess a relatively plain coiffure.  During initiation rituals associated with reproduction ceremonies, the dancer wearing this mask performs subtle, gentle, flowing movements that are more controlled than the male dancer's more aggressive movements.  A magnificent mask of a grand scale, a supremely sound state of preservation and excellent provenance.  Size:  16"H, with stand 24 3/4" high.

Provenance: Ex-private Pickard Collection,  Woods Davy, L.A. USA,  Belgian Collection (Dartevelle).

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
