Description
Africa, DR Congo, Shaba District, Hemba tribe, early 20th century. This wooden Hemba mask was carved to imitate a monkey face featuring a prominent, crescent shaped mouth with jagged teeth, slanted eyes, and a pointed nose. The function and meaning of these masks is still unclear to scholars. Some theories suggest that the animated expressions of these masks may evoke a beneficiary spirit. Striking form and deep hues. Nice patina. Size: 6" H x4" W.
