Description
Africa, Ethiopia, Gurage or Kambatta culture, early-mid 20th century. Rectangular carved wooden headrest/neck rest incised with geometric designs with a curved upper platform supported by rectangular legs over an oblong shaped base. The Kambatta people have historically lived west of the Gurage culture, along the banks of the Upper Oma River. Both peoples traditionally have used wooden neck rests such as this example to protect their coiffures while sleeping. Black, shiny patina from extensive use. A wonderful example with characteristic architectural form. Size: 7" wide x 7" high.
