India, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze figure of the Hindu goddess Durga riding a lion and holding a sword in her upper right hand, a conch n her upper left, a shield in her lower left and lower right hand is in the reassurance gesture. 264 grams, 12.5cm (5"). Private collection, London, UK; acquired prior to 1990. The goddess Durga is nearly always shown with a lion or tiger as her mount. It is believed that her iconography developed from goddesses originating in ancient Western Asia, such as Cybele and Ishtar. [No Reserve]
