India, 19th-early 20th century AD. Cast bronze betel nut cutters in the form of a Makara looking backwards. 335 grams, 19cm (7 1/2"). Private collection, London, UK; acquired prior to 1990. A makara is a mythical aquatic monster, usually identified with a crocodile, although often shown with an elephant's trunk, a fish tail or foliated tail. The makara symbolizes water, the source of all existence and fertility, and is the conveyance of the goddess Ganga. [No Reserve]
