Jacob Semiatin American 1915-2003 - Modern abstract watercolor in the style of Braque . Black & White paint. Signed lower right. Strathmore insignia. H 22" x L 30" Jacob Semiatin was born to Hungarian Jewish parents in Dublin in 1915. His parents were seeking the American dream and five years later Jacob was in Brooklyn, NY. He became a member of the Brooklyn society of artists and in the late 30s and 40s, exhibited at their shows. During this period, many works were created of Brooklyn and the New York area. He served his country in the army in WWII and painted many watercolors of the American Southwest. Shortly before and after the war he found his tempo as he fully embraced abstract art and thereby developed a friendship with James Johnson Sweeney, the 2nd director of the Guggenheim Museum (1952-1960). With his fresh, bold and unique expressionist manner, Semiatin's first one-man show was at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in New York, the same site where artist Mark Rothko was introduced.
