Amsterdam: Zacharie Chatelain, 1753. 10.25" x 8". With 130 plates (of which 79 are double-page or folding), 3 folding maps, and several finely engraved vignettes and initials. Period full speckled calf with labels in gilt and spines decorated in gilt. Minor rubbing/chipping to extremities, title label of 5th volume lacking, marbled endpapers removed from supplement volume. Bookplates of Herbert Eberhard Hering to pastedowns, contents very bright and clean, including the leaves of plates. An excellent set. ****** Featuring an impressive collection of engraved plates depicting battle scenes and fortifications (and other subjects) as well as double-page maps. Polybius was a Greek historian of the Hellenistic Period. The present example belonged to Eugene de Beauharnais (Duke of Leuchtenberg) with his monogram gilt-stamp to the boards of each volume. The supplement volume (present here, volume 7) was printed more than 20 years following the initial set of 6 and is not typically found with most sets.
