In part: ""…Herewith I send the 20 copies of your 'Overland Journey ' to which you are entitled under the rules…I promised to send Mr. [Anson] Burlingame a copy of your paper…May I trouble you to hand him one of yours. The attention bestowed upon the Society by Dr. Williams and yourself has been of much effect. Our residents are very mercurial. They go as they are led until they become…I hope to get away for Japan en route for the U.S…I take much interest in your efforts at Peking…""Written while serving as Consul General in Shanghai. William A.P. Martin (1827-1916) was an American Presbyterian missionary in China. Mounting traces on last (blank) page. Light toning otherwise very good condition.
