SAMUEL P. LANGLEY (1834 - 1906) American aviation pioneer who explored the possibility of flight by heavier-than-air machines and actually succeeded in inventing such a machine which flew over the Potomac for 3 000 feet. A.L.S. 1p. 8vo. Washington Sept. 7 1888 on letterhead of Wormley's Hotel to Capt. Otho Michaelis of the U. S. Signal Corps. In part: ""...I expect to go down East...next week and would like very much to look in upon you going or coming from Boston. Will you address a line to me there...letting me know..."". Light wear and a couple of insignificant tears to right edge very good condition.
