Description
BRITISH CROSS BELT PLATE RECOVERED AT WATERLOO Cross belt plate of the 33rd Regiment 1st Yorkshire West Riding Regiment 2 3/8"" x 3 1/8"" dug at the scene of the Battle of Waterloo. The paws and hook on the reverse remain intact and almost all of the regimental emblem is discernible. The 33rd Foot was raised in 1702 by order of Queen Anne and in 1793 its command was assumed by the future Duke of Wellington. It fought throughout the Napoleonic Wars and before the regiment was attached to Alten's 3rd Division at Quatre Bras. At Waterloo the regiment formed at the center of the ridge between Hougomont and La Haye Sainte where it repulsed multiple French assaults...and lost half its strength.
