PORTUGUESE GOVERNOR IS BEHEADED IN MACAU Manuscript document 2pp. 4to. Macao ca. Sep. 6 1849 a contemporaneous and apparently official translation of a dispatch sent to John W. Davis U.S. Consul in Canton concerning the murder of the Portuguese Governor of Macau. In part: ""...I Sen Kwang Tsin Hereditary Lord of the first grade Governor General of the two Kwang Provinces a President of the Board of War Minister & Commissioner of the Ta Tsing Empire…acknowledge the receipt of the Honorable Envoy's dispatch…your Honorable Nation [United States] should for the time being bring its Naval force to the harbor of Macao for the protection of its citizens and their property is in accordance with Celestial principles and the common sense of mankind and I have not the slightest suspicion…your Honorable Government to maintain its neutrality and to have no treaties of Alliance…to pursue peace…As to the murder of the Portuguese Colonel…I the Minister…offer a reward for the vigorous arrest of the murderers…make a secret search and to arrest them & that absolutely they must take the Colonel's head and arm and to produce them without delay…"" Docketed on verso of attached integral leaf: ""Translation Sen. Viceroy to Hon. J.W. Davis Sept. 6 1849."" The murdered Portuguese governor was Joao Maria Ferreirt do Amaral (1803-1849) killed Aug. 22 1849 by seven Chinese men who knocked him off his horse and cut off his head.
