Description
Larry Rivers (1923-2002) American artist, musician, filmmaker and occasional actor. During the early 1960s Rivers lived in the Hotel Chelsea, notable for its artistic residents such as Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Leonard Cohen, Arthur C. Clarke, Dylan Thomas, Sid Vicious and multiple people associated with Andy Warhol's Factory. In 1965 Rivers had his first comprehensive retrospective in five important American museums. His final work for the exhibition was The History of the Russian Revolution, which was later on extended permanent display at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. During 1967 he was in London collaborating with the American painter Howard Kanovitz. Established as one of America's most important postwar artists, Rivers continued, until his death on August 14, 2002, to exhibit regularly both in the United States and abroad and to create work that combined realistically rendered images within a loosely brushed, quasi-abstract background. His primary gallery being the Marlborough Gallery in New York City. In 2002 a major retrospective of Rivers' work was held at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. ORIGINAL color lithograph, "A hut Can Be A Hairdo", 1968. Printed by Atelier Mourlot LTD, New York, 12 x 9". This was made for inclusion [insert] in the art magazine ART IN AMERICA, bound in the July-August 1968 issue. We have not removed it from the magazine and it is as it was since 1968. No fading or damage. One of the magazine's earliest artist projects, this inserted work, A Hut Can Be a Hairdo, presents a voluminous bright purple mound that doubles as both a house and a hairstyle for a female figure.
Another example of this lithograph is in the collection of Brown Univer4sity Art Museum.
