Frascati. Henry Stuart IX (1725-1807). Medal for the episcopate in Frascati 1788. D / HEN IX May FR ET HIB REX BRIT FID DEF CARD EP TVSC. Bust right with hat and cape.
Henry Benedict Thomas Edward Maria Clement Francis Xavier Stuart, Cardinal Duke of York ( 1725-1807) , he was a Roman Catholic Cardinal as well as the final Jacobite heir to the thrones of England, Scotland, and France and Ireland.
Brother to the 'Young Pretender' Bonnie Prince Charlie. After Prince Charlie's death in 1788, the Papacy did not recognise Henry as the lawful ruler of England, Scotland and Ireland, but referred to him as Cardinal Duke of York however the Jacobites and his personal entourage referred to him as ' Henry IX of England ,France and Ireland and Henry I of Scotland ' although he publicly referred to himself as ' Cardinal Duke of York nuncupatus.'
Henry had a long career in the Clergy of the Roman Catholic Church ( he is still credited as the longest serving Cardinal in the church's history).
This is a white metal medallion celebrating the Cardinal who was also king of England! Dated 1788 ( MDCCLXXVIII) 2" diameter
