Description
YAN WANG Deity YAMA. A bottle-shaped vase, made of earthenware with a thick poly-chrome glaze. A two-layer construction, with a reticulated outer decorative layer and vessel inner layer, seen through the holes and left unglazed. Made of a glazed light brown earthenware. Signed on the bottom as pictured with six characters reign mark, which stands for the Kangxi period (1662-1722) of the Qing Dynasty. A black central depiction, seen on both sides, contrasts well with the colorful designs. It is a stylized ghost, most likely a portrayal of Yama (Yan Wang), the Chinese and Buddhist deity, God of Death and ruler of the realm of death (Diyu). Measurements: Approx. 12" high x 7" at widest
Condition
Displays outstandingly! Some rough spots from production, common on such antique pottery. Glaze crazing from the great age. Some lines on the outer (pierced) layer, as pictured, mostly evident on one of the portrayals of Yama. They are possibly from one of the firings in the early manner of production
