Description
Sukunda altar oil lamp. Newar people of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. Made of brass and copper by a skilled artisan, commissioned from a wealthy family. The fuel oil for the lamp is stored inside, usually mustard oil. Ribbed pear shape with repousse skull decorations and flared foot, each with a Naga-form handle. Sukundas are used in most Newar rituals, including birth and death rituals. The larger examples, like this one, are used in marriage ceremonies. They are carried in the processions from the groom's to the bride's house and the return procession when the bride leaves her parent's home. Circa 1850's. Measurements: Approx. 9.5" high, 9.25" at widest x 4.5"
