The Mother of God Iverskaya with the Christ Child, adorned by an elaborate cloisonné enamel oklad
Provenance: German private collection
The Russian icon from the late 19th century is painted in oil. The Mother of God Iverskaya turns her gaze away from the beholder, while she directs the latter’s attention towards her Son who is seated on her left arm, signing in benediction and holding a scroll. The garments of the figures are covered in silver and the oklad is decorated with cloisonné enamel in blues, green, red and white. The corners of the oklad are occupied by prominent white crosses, the cut-out haloes bear mostly floral motifs and the beams of the crown of the Mother of God terminate to river pearls.
The oklad is marked by Pavel Ovchinnikov, with the Imperial Warrant, Moscow and standard silver 84, 1896-1908. It is in very good condition besides gold abrasion of the frame and two newly attached pearls. The dimensions are 8.5 x 9.8 cm. (tm)
