Provenance: German private collection; Elite Decorative Arts, March 31, 2012
This kovsh is presumably the work of the Moscow silversmith Vasili Kubarev and it dates to the period between 1908 and 1917. The crystal bowl of the kovsh is cut with a star pattern on base and wall. On the bowl sits a scroll handle of silver with engraved curl pattern of Slavic style with the monogram ‘KC’ and the date ‘19 17/IX21’ commemorating September 21, 1917. The silver mount is adorned with one red and three green set cabochons.
The kovsh is marked on handle and rim. It holds the 84 silver purity mark, the workmaster's mark ‘BK’ BK’ (presumably ‘VK’ for Vasili Kubarev, Moscow, 1908-1917) and woman’s head facing right. The kovsh is in very good condition with minimal sliding traces on the base, nicks on the red cabochon and scratches on the left edge of the handle. The overall dimensions are 9 x 27 x 15.5 cm. (tm)
