The first published edition. The illustrator John Tenniel having been deeply dissatisfied with the printing of the illustrations in the first printing convinced Carroll to suppress the book at his own expense. Only about 28 copies of that 1865 Macmillan first issue survive, most in institutional collections making this 1886 edition the first published edition. The unbound sheets from the 1865 printing were shipped to the United States and issued, with a new title page, as the first American Edition. Our copy has the inverted "S" on the last line of the Contents page; pale blue endpapers, thought to be early issue points; page 30 incorrectly numbered '3'. Binder's ticket "Bound by Burn. 37 & 38 Kirby St." on rear pastedown.

Binding rubbed and worn, rear joint splitting, hinges repaired, bookplates; one preliminary leaf detached, a few page edges uneven; good.
