Description
Engraved by Anthony Cardon (Flemish, 1772-1813) after the painting by Philip James de Loutherbourg (French, 1740-1812), "The Battle of Alexandria on the 21st of March 1801 (La Battaile d' Alexandrie)", hand colored engraving, published in 1805 by Anthony Cardon in London, England. Engraving depicts a battle between the French and British near Nicopolis in Egypt, with a group of French soldiers circled around General Menou as the battle rages on in the background with fallen soldiers on all sides and looming clouds of smoke above. Inscribed below image lower left "Painted by P.J. de Loutherbourg Esq", lower center with publication information, and lower right "Engraved by Anthony Cardon". Framed approximately 36.75" x 43.5", sight size approximately 23.75" x 30.5".
