Description
Chinese, 20th Century. Pair of Charlotte Horstmann red lacquered armchairs with curved chair rail supported by pierced, foliate splats and turned spindles over a removable paneled seat raised on front cabriole legs. The underside of each chair mounted with brass label Charlotte Horstmann, Hong Kong. Height 33.75", width 22.5" (arm to arm), seat depth 17.75", seat height 18.5".
The late Charlotte Horstmann (German/Chinese,1909 - 2003) was a renowned Asian art dealer whose business also included creating fine furniture in the early Chinese, mostly Ming Style. In 1955 she opened a small shop on Ice House Road on Hong Kong Island.
