Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 900-1100 CE.  Carving of a bird on dark red, kidney bean-shaped stone.  The Chimu carried stones carved with animals like this while hunting in order to bring good fortune.  What's remarkable about this little gem is that while a profile of the bird's head is depicted on one side of the stone, the artist continued to carve the remainder of this avian creature's body on the verso.  Ingenious, maybe?  Endearing, definitely! 3" (7.75 cm) L x 1 3/4" (4.5 cm) W at widest point.

Provenance: Ex-Powell Collection, White City, Oregon, acquired prior to 1964.

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
