Description
Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 900-1100 CE. Â Carving of a bird on dark red, kidney bean-shaped stone. Â The Chimu carried stones carved with animals like this while hunting in order to bring good fortune. Â What's remarkable about this little gem is that while a profile of the bird's head is depicted on one side of the stone, the artist continued to carve the remainder of this avian creature's body on the verso. Â Ingenious, maybe? Â Endearing, definitely! 3" (7.75 cm) L x 1 3/4" (4.5 cm) W at widest point.
