Description
Here is a Victorian era accessory used by well-to-do ladies to hitch up their long skirt or petticoat when stepping over a wet or muddy portion of the street. The skirt lifter was helpful, as the streets were not so clean and dry back then. It works with a pull of the string, which raises the floral ornament at the center, allowing the clamps to close onto the fabric at the bottom of the skirt. The string alone may or may not be from the period. This lifter measures 5 inches long. The design features a lovely flower encircled by a pinwheel of beaded plumes. Its condition is excellent for its age. This rare item makes a fine conversation piece for anyone who enjoys Victorian fashion.
