1864 Civil War Era Ambrotype
c. 1864 Civil War Era Ambrotype.
c. 1864 Civil War Era Ambrotyp, measuring 1.75” x 1.5” housed in an 18 karat gold frame and backed by mother of pearl, both later than the image. Showing a waist-length portrait of a distinguished-looking gentleman in a suit and bowtie. Ambrotypes were produced between 1854 and 1865, so this image is either from shortly before the Civil War or during it. The chemicals used have produced a dark line around the outer edges of the image. Very attractive.
