An impressive design Abraham Lincoln Postally Used “Mourning” Cover, with a large black Portrait of Lincoln in oval, black borders, 3c (Scott-65), mailed to New Bedford, Mass. by bold “cogwheel” fancy cancel, with matching San Francisco, Cal. 6/8/65 DCDS, cover reduced at right when opened affecting the outer border, trivial light edge toning. This special and impressive looking Cover is Illustrated and cataloged by Dr. James Milgram in Abraham Lincoln Illustrated Envelopes and Letter Paper 1860-1865 as AL-374, This is the Illustrated Plate Example shown in that reference. A scarce design, attractive usage, with a lovely and rare San Francisco cancellation.
