1854 Virginia Tax Bill on 4 Slaves and “1 White”
1854, Louisa County (Virginia) Tax Bill, Including the Tax on 4 Slaves, Choice Very Fine.
This is an original, pre-Civil War, 3.25” x 6” tax statement, printed on blue paper, for the year 1854 (changed by hand from the printed date of 1853). This document directs the sheriff of Louisa County to collect taxes from Joseph Campbell and son William, including the tax on “4 Slaves” and “1 White”. Joseph Campbell lived in nearby Albemarle County, and notes on this form “Capital invested $1200.” This document is in excellent condition, with 2 original folds, and a single pinhole in the lower left. A fine example of a slave related document.
