51 mm. Julian IP-19b. Belden-34. This is the Small or Third Size Martin Van Buren Indian Peace Medal, which is much rarer than the larger size bronze strikings. Rich Hartzog’s 1986 supplement and price guide for Julian’s “Medals of the United States Mint” notes that only 5 sales of the small size bronze medal could be found over the past 150 years! This particular piece has lovely semi-prooflike fields on both sides, beneath rich natural mahogany-brown toning. This wonderful medal has sharp wire rims on the obverse and reverse edges. There are a few tiny nicks and trivial hairlines of very minor consequence. A very rare and important example of the Smallest or Third size 51 mm Martin Van Buren Indian Peace Medal.
