Lot 35 save

Stereoscopic ambrotype , seated gentleman

I had originally presented this as a stereodaguerreotype, because it is in the familiar format of one, and the detail was so sharp. The creamy not silver backdrop fooled me, as sometimes daguerreotypes have this quality. But this is actually a much rarer object-- a stereoscopic ambrotype, and it is a nice example. Reverse-painted frame within a gold surround. Clean intact tape and black backing.

These portraits made from two plates from the same camera taken from slightly altered positions often have slightly exaggerated stereo. This is an interested mode of early portraiture. [4]
