"Rose of Sharon" Horace Bristol Grapes of Wrath

7 1/8" x 5 ¾" image on 10" x 8" paper, 1937,38, printed later. Signed in pencil on the verso.

Bristol traveled in the Central Valley of California after the dust bowl with John Steinbeck—they were going to do a book together. But Steinbeck withdrew from the project, and went on to write his masterpiece "Grapes of Wrath." This image, influenced by Dorothea Lange, was originally titled "Nursing Mother in Camp, near Visalia, Tulare County, California." It inspired one of the great scenes in Steinbeck's novel, and in deference to the fame of the novel Bristol re-titled it "Rose of Sharon." [4]
