13" x 20" gelatin-silver print on 18" x 24" paper. Stamped, and signed and dated in pencil on verso.
Despite the title, this is not a portrait nor a representation of a place or time, at least in the usual sense. It is a wonderful photographic object of tones and shapes, in which we can see an image of a woman who looks and is looked at.
Illustrated p. 115, "Silke Grossmann Photographien Mit Texten von Frieda Grafe," Stuttgart 1992 (Winner of the Albert Renger-Patzsch publication award.) Grossmann is Professor of Photography at the Hamburg (Germany) Art School. She has made prize-winning films as well as photographs. [4]
