The present set consists of two dining and nine soup plates made by the ‘Meißener Ofen- und Porzellanfabrik, vorm. C. Teichert’. The plates feature the onion pattern, which has been one of the classics of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory of Meissen since 1730. Around 1900, the ‘Meißener Ofen- und Porzellanfabrik, vorm. C. Teichert’ received the license to produce the popular onion pattern.

The plates bear the oval manufacturer’s mark ‘Meissen’ with a star and ‘Germany’ in underglaze blue and the impressed mark ‘Meissen’. They are in good condition with some slight signs of wear. Some plates have long hairline cracks. One plate is chipped on the underside. The diameter of the dining plates is 24.5 cm, and the soup plates are 25 cm in diameter.

Meißener Ofen- und Porzellanfabrik (formerly C. Teichert)

In 1857, the master potter Johann Friedrich Carl Teichert took over the production of stove tiles from the modeler of the Royal Porcelain Manufactory. After Teichert’s death, the production of porcelain was launched and the factory was renamed ‘Meißener Ofen- und Porzellanfabrik (formerly C. Teichert)’. The porcelain, often featuring the classic hand painted blue onion pattern, would become known as the ‘middle-class Meißen’. After 1891, the product range was extended and different kinds of tiles were produced. In the 1920s, the company bought the shares of a couple of manufactories, including Ernst Teichert Ltd., and the production continued under the new name ‘Teichert Werke’. In 1930, the porcelain production was ceased and the company continued the production of stove tiles. (cko)
