Precisely executed portrait on porcelain, presumably commissioned by the manufacturer ‘Heubach’ in Lichte, Thuringia

The present porcelain painting reveals a praying girl in front of a river landscape. The work was made by the well-known porcelain painter Engelbert Brödel and was probably commissioned by the traditional manufacturer ‘Heubach’, located in Lichte, Thuringia. Already in 1876, the production of decorative porcelain and portrait pieces was established in the small Thuringian town, which soon developed an international reputation. Porcelain painters like the brothers Alfred and Engelbert Brödel thus became active here. The present portrait dates to the period around 1910, when the products from Lichte were awarded with the gold medal at the World Exhibition in Brussels.

The porcelain painting is verso signed and inscribed ‘Engelbert Brödel. Lichte b. Wallendorf’ and shows as well the embossed number ‘324’, further there is a handwritten label bearing the title and inscription ‘Im Gebet. Ab: 30.‘. The painting is in very good condition considering its age. The plate measures 22 x 14.8 cm, the framed dimensions are 29 x 21.5 cm.
