Description
Cambodia, ca. 11th century CE. Wonderful sandstone section of a lintel decorated with central image of the mythical beast Kala, a ferocious monster symbolic of time in its all-devouring aspect and associated with the destructive side of the god Siva; surrounded by floral elements. Brought out of Cambodia using elephant laborers, in the 1940's. A large and heavy section (requiring crating and extra shipping) measuring 18" H x 27" W.
Provenance: Medill Sarkisian, brought out of Cambodia in the 1940's, then thru descent to grandsons.
