A black and white portrait of Queen Elizabeth II – fitted with her crown, jewelry, a fur coat, and aviator sunglasses – drips with red, white, blue, yellow, black and green acrylic paint. A provocative figure in the art world, Mr. Brainwash often appropriates images from pop culture, history and art history, subtle tweaking the picture or its context to undermine the tone of the source. This irreverent brand of appropriation has made his work highly coveted by contemporary art collectors.

Executed in 2013, this screenprint and acrylic on wove paper is signed, inscribed and dated. The full sheet is printed with deckled edges, measuring 30 x 22 " inches. In overall good condition with no evidence of tears or repairs.

Mr. Brainwash (French, b. 1966)

Born Thierry Guetta, the French street artist and videographer Mr. Brainwash, or MBW, debuted in 2008 with the popular solo exhibition “Life is Beautiful” in Los Angeles which extended for three additional months. He became the main subject of the film “Exit Through the Gift Shop” in 2010 which was allegedly directed by the infamous British street artist Banksy. Working mainly with stenciled pop culture iconography, Mr. Brainwash has also created cover artwork for musicians like Madonna, Michael Jackson, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers and painted a commemorative 9/11 mural for Century 21 in New York.
