He began to study the art of water color painting at the age of ten. From 1956 to 1961 he concentrated on the different techniques of oil painting under the tutelage of Mr. Chu Yen Lo, one of Mainland China's most promising artists. In 1961 he moved to Peking for further study. Then in 1962, Mr. Chen moved to Hong Kong and established himself as an artist excelling in the application of horse hair and heavily textured oil with palate knife techniques. Chen Mao believed in supplying color, texture and sublime images to his canvases but wishes the viewer to use his own experience and imagination to fix the mood and content of his paintings. Chen Mao maintained his own gallery in Hong Kong and would personally exhibit his work in public. Ironically, he is probably better known in the United States, Europe and Australia where much of his work was sold, other than in his home city of Hong Kong. Sadly, Mr. Chen passed away on January 12, 2011.
