Christian Dior (1905-1957)

Christian Dior was born in 1905 in Granville, France. As a young man, Dior was passionate about art and expressed an interest in becoming an architect. However, he submitted to pressure from his father, a highly successful fertilizer manufacturer, and enrolled in the École des Sciences Politiques to study political science with the understanding that he would eventually find work as a diplomat. After graduating in 1928, Dior opened a small art gallery, handling works by notable artists such as Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Max Jacob. In 1931, he was forced to close the gallery due to financial and personal reasons. Following the close of the gallery, Dior began selling his fashion sketches of hats and dresses, leading to an illustrating position in 1935 at Figaro Illustré. Several years later, Dior was hired as a design assistant by Paris couturier Robert Piguet and then with Lucien Lelong. Dior established his own fashion house in 1946, backed by textile manufacturer Marcel Boussac. For his first collection, he designed the ‘New Look’ which was characterized by feminine elegance, with delicate shoulders, tight waists and full skirts. Dior was inspired by the spirit of the Parisian woman and wanted to invigorate the grim post-war reality of Europe. It is this characteristic that has cemented Dior’s work as the epitome of feminine beauty and what has led to the house’s international success. Today, the fashion house sells women’s, men’s and children’s fashion, perfume, cosmetics, jewelry and timepieces.
