Al. G. Field promoted himself as the dean of minstrelry. Singer, actor and radio personality Billy Murray was one of America's best-selling acoustic recording stars in the early 1900s. Known for his versatile voice, Murray recorded popular songs in various styles including jazz, vaudeville, comic, Broadway, patriotic and ragtime. He was considered the primary interpreter of the songs of George M. Cohan, received the nickname "The Denver Nightingale," and recorded on most major record labels. Murray joined Field's troupe as a blackface performer around 1903 in San Francisco. Author: Field, Al. G.
