Item Details
Description
57. [THE SUN OF LIBERTY] Early partisan Connecticut newspaper promoting the Republican passions of its editor Samuel Morse who later edited The Georgia Republican and State Intelligencer. Vol. 1, No. 14, 4pp, 10½"x17½", Norwalk, Oct 21, 1800. Largely editorial and echoing the "rights of man," writers decry the monarchist tendencies of some American leaders including President John Adams, Alexander Hamilton and others. A letter by political economist Tench Coxe asserts that Hamilton had stated to him "at a meeting on official business, that he was a monarchist; that stated the fact in 1795 from a sense of duty to Timothy Pickering Esq. then secretary of state and war" and General Washington knew of it. He further states that Dr. Benjamin Rush will prove Adams a monarchist. Page three records the Proclamation by President of Adams following the suspension of trade with France, that the island of Hispaniola will be declared independent of that suspension to the best interest of the country. Evidences general age toning; worn; scattered light dampstains; multiple small fold tears with small paper loss; dark circular ring stain show-through, lighter on second leaf. Est: $150-250
