A fine tobacco box by Stobwasser’s successor depicting St. Bernards in a snowy landscape

This snuffbox features a representation with Bernard dogs rescuing a young man buried by an avalanche. In the background high firs stand before high cliffs and a clouded nightly sky.

This motif is listed in Richter’s online catalog raisonné of Brunswick lacquer ware under the title ‘Rettung aus der Lawine’.

The tobacco box is titled by hand in red ‘au mont St. Bernard’ on the inside of the lid. The inside of the base bears an illegible handwritten number in red ’79..’ as well as the stamped signature ‘Stobwasser’s Nachfolger / Meyer & Wried / in / Braunschweig’. It is in good condition with age and wear. Cover with a fine craquelure. The upper and lower left corner of the cover as well as the inner edge are restored. The dimensions are 2.5 x 9.2 x 6.3 cm.
