A tobacco box of excellent quality with classical nude

This snuff box depicts an unclothed young woman, presumably the Greek goddess of love in the typical ‘Venus pudica’ pose next to a marble sculpture of Venus within an idyllic landscape scenery with a river and mountains in the background.



The motif is listed in Richter’s online catalog raisonné of Brunswick lacquer ware under the title ‘Venus’.



The tobacco box is in good condition with signs of age and wear. There is light craquelure to the surface of the. The edge of the image with a fine fissure and minor retouchings. There are some small restorations. The diameter is 10.3 cm. (tfa)
